What Is the Entire Incident?

On June 24, an alleged confrontation between Indian Army personnel and Jammu & Kashmir Police came to light in Kishtwar district.

According to reports, the dispute began after an official from the Transport Department, with the assistance of the local police, seized a government-issued Toyota Hilux SUV belonging to an Army officer.

The disagreement reportedly escalated on Wednesday, leading to a face-off between Army personnel and local police. Following the incident, the Jammu & Kashmir Police registered an FIR against Army personnel.

The Indian Army, meanwhile, issued a statement saying that the matter is under investigation.

What Happened?

According to reports, a government-issued Toyota Hilux SUV belonging to an Army officer was seized by Tasleem Wani, the Assistant Regional Transport Officer (ARTO) of Kishtwar, with the assistance of local police personnel. The vehicle was then taken to the Atholi Police Station, where the alleged confrontation later took place.

A source claimed that Major Vikas Sharma of the 17 Rashtriya Rifles was travelling in the SUV along with another soldier and a child when they were stopped in the Paddar area.

The source alleged that the vehicle was seized illegally despite all its documents being in order.

When contacted by BBC News Hindi for a response, Tasleem Wani declined to comment on the matter, saying, “I do not want to talk about it.”
